Stephen Fung shines in The Poet, the true story of renowned Chinese poet Gu Cheng (1956-1993). A gifted and brilliant poet, Gu Cheng emerged upon the literary scene in the years following the death of Mao Zedong. His work, known as "misty poetry", was noted for its innovation, and he became a celebrity within his immediate world. However, the pressures of his art took its toll, and Gu Cheng's work became increasingly experimental and even incomprehensible. Tragically, he committed suicide in 1993 after killing his wife Xie Ye. Directed by Casey Chan, The Poet dramatizes Gu Cheng's rise to fame in China, and his eventual death as an expatriate in New Zealand. By turns erotic, revealing, and utterly tragic, The Poet is the rare Hong Kong film about an even rarer Chinese artist. Starring Stephen Fung as Gu Cheng, Theresa Lee as Xie Ye, and Japanese actress Ayako Morino as Gu Cheng's surviving mistress, Ching-Er.
